gravel yards are source for earthbag building soil

THE DIRT FOR EARTHBAG BUILDING can consist of almost any kind of clean soil available on site, or the soil can be imported from a local gravel yard. Reject sand or road base are sometimes names to describe the by-product of the process that separates sand and clay fines from the gravel being produced at these facilities. This reject material often has suitable clay to sand ratio for earthbag building. For wall construction, the soil is pre-moistened to about 10-15% moisture content. After compaction the earth will cure into a cement-like, hard block. Reject fines are easy to dig and often dirt-cheap! We are now paying $1.80 per ton plus delivery. However, the beauty of earthbag building is in its ability to utilize a wider range of soils than are suitable for most other earth building techniques such as adobe block and traditional rammed earth, so almost any type of clean, site-available soil will work!
